Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man

Oh, THIS is why Mumford & Sons drew such a huge crowd at CMJ.

(Dave’s case in point.)

davehyndman:

I’m loving Mumford & Sons album Sigh No More.

Why do I do this? I somehow miss or ignore a recommendation from one “music friend” that I trust. But then react to another one. David Noel (and I think others) pointed us to these guys back in September. But it was Bijan’s post of Roll Away Your Stone a few days ago that made me listen to the song and then buy the album. Oh well. I’m on it now. Heavy rotation the last 3 days. Had a hard time picking a song from the 12 wonderful ones that make up this album.

…the goal is to get this music to as many people as possible, connect directly with the ones who like it, build products those people want to own, and turn a profit. […] The goal is to grow every single week and not lose money. In other words we’re following Clayton Christesen’s golden rule of innovation: Be patient for growth, impatient for profit. Ian Rogers. Koalas and Uzis: Managing Get Busy Committee.

The Dutchess & the Duke - Hands

How is this chorus so sparse and so full at the same time? D&D’s instrumentation — jangling guitar, reverb’ed tambourine, dissonant organ — is straight out of the 60s, but the band’s (hipster) aesthetic is decidedly modern. I’d love to see these guys play live. From Sunset/Sunrise [Hardly Art; 2009].

Fuck Buttons - Olympians

hungryghoast and kafka-on-the-shore have pretty much nailed this one.  I have nothing to add.

hungryghoast: “like Kraftwerk firing pink noise at the inside of Vangelis’ skull as he composes “Chariots Of Fire.” In Goa.”  - Warren Ellis

kafka-on-the-shore: Oh look! Isn’t that me standing on that very crowded platform at Pitchfork station, trying to jump on the Fuck Buttons band wagon? Yes, it is. And I can see that the peeps already on board are looking rather irritated by that sudden influx of button fuckers. Tough shit, I say, they’ll just have to make room.

Help construct our future digital world. Build honestly, naturally, authentically, beautifully, not motivated by page views or ad revenue but by what the digital world should be, in its purest, noblest sense. Articulate digital spaces that nurture the soul and the spirit.

Don’t leave it to today’s companies to solve these problems, as they will only perpetuate the same habits they have already adopted. There needs to be a new vision for the future of the web, one that is sensitive both to the human individual and the human collective, just like real life.

Catching up on music

Just bought a slew of ‘09 albums I hadn’t yet paid for. Atlas Sound, Bibio, Fever Ray, The Flaming Lips, Florence & the Machine, Fuck Buttons, Girls, Japandroids, The Mountain Goats. Starting to think about the year’s best of.

I am really digging this Fuck Buttons album. Tarot Sport, out now on ATP.

After removing dozens of photographs from their frames, I removed this one of my first true love, Quinn, loading film into a camera. It had been hanging on the wall next to my window for 10 years, and had been so drenched in sunlight over time that the paper behind the photo had been stained with a ghosted replica of the image. I gasped when I saw it. Some memories are harder to erase than others.

Destroyer - Bay of Pigs

To call this an epic song would be a disservice. It’s more like a layered drama with a dozen interweaving story lines. The genre risks tediousness, but Dan Behar’s killer melodies and sweeping synthscapes spin these threads into gold. From Destroyer’s  Bay Of Pigs EP out now on Merge.

Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson - Shake a Shot

Yes! This is great! Downloading the album from eMusic right now.

stylman:

My friend Todd got me hooked on MBAR’s first album, so naturally I wanted to hear the second.  I was surprised to hear how sonically expansive it is, then I noticed that Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio) was the producer.  Everything that guy touches just works.
